Spisergasse: urban diversity meets old town charm
Spisergasse is a hive of activity. The stores present their wide range of products and people stroll leisurely from one store to the next. "This is my favorite store," says a young woman to her friend, pointing to the boutique with the colorful postcards and greeting cards in front of the door. "I found an original birthday present there the other day." The two women live in Herisau, but regularly come to St.Gallen to store. They particularly like the small specialist stores in Spisergasse. "We always find something special here," they say and disappear into the boutique.
Spisergasse is one of the most important shopping streets and most beautiful alleyways in the city of St.Gallen. It is located in the eastern part of the old town, starting at Bärenplatz and ending at Spisertor. It is an extension of Multergasse and in recent years has developed into a shopping street and residential alley with its very own character. This is characterized on the one hand by the many different specialist stores, which are innovative and urban with their selected, stylish product ranges. In addition to essential oils, high-quality designer glasses and trendy women's fashion, you will also find natural cosmetic products, tailor-made men's suits and sustainable children's toys. On the other hand, restaurants and small cafés, both indoors and outdoors, invite you to take a deep breath after long shopping trips or stressful working days, giving the alley a Mediterranean ambience, especially on warm and sunny days.

An alley to discover
The two women also take a short break. They have found what they were looking for in the gift shop, but don't want to reveal what they have bought. Just this much: "Something unusual again," they say and laugh. However, a stroll through the cobbled alley is not only worthwhile for the special shopping experience or the culinary delights. Spisergasse, whose name commemorates one of the most important merchant families in St. Gallen in the 13th to 15th centuries, also has a lot to offer historically. This includes the intact half-timbered houses and historic buildings with picturesque names such as "Zum gelben Hahn", "Zum blauen Himmel" or "Zur Nachtigall", as well as the colorful, well-preserved paintings on the house facades and the striking bay windows, some of which are several stories high. The charm that the houses exude is particularly appreciated by the people who live here.
The alley and its stories
History is alive in Spisergasse and there is a lot to tell. Also about Aepliplatz at the turn-off into Turmgasse and the "children's fountain" in front of the house "Zum Freieck". This square was named after the St.Gallen statesman Arnold Otto Aepli (1816-1897), whose birthplace is in the immediate vicinity. The fountain is one of 110 fountains in the city of St.Gallen and was designed by Zurich sculptor Karl Geiser in 1953. However, he was unable to complete it as he died four years later. Rolf Brem, a sculptor from Lucerne, completed the fountain in 1959, which shows two children and an animal made of bronze above a modern-shaped basin. The Schlössli at the eastern end of Spisergasse with its castle-like character, built by Laurenz Zollikofer, a grandson of Vadian, in 1586, and the Spisertor gate are also particularly impressive. This was the last gate of the medieval town fortifications to be demolished in 1879. The little bell tower at the commercial building at Zeughausgasse 22 is still a reminder of the former gateway to the town.
With such a lively history, it is not surprising that tourists are often to be found in Spisergasse. Impressed, they take one photo after another and thus carry a piece of this modern-traditional alleyway out into the world.
